Life Legacy
Dorothy “Dot” Louise Reed, 83 years old of Penelope, TX passed away Monday, June 20, 2011 at her home. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 22 between 6 and 8 PM at Wade Funeral Home in Hubbard. Services will be Thursday, June 23 at 2 PM at Wade Funeral Chapel with Chaplain Stephen Burnett officiating. Burial will follow at Penelope Cemetery.
Dorothy was born Sept 20, 1927 to Myrtle Mae (Loper) and William Scott McConnell in Wichita Falls. In 1943 she began her first real job at Sheppard Field driving trucks, busses and staff cars on base. She later met her husband, Junior Reed, on a visit to Oregon and they married on July 5, 1945 in Henrietta. They moved several times before they settled in Waco in 1951. While in Waco she worked at Westview Bowling Alley for many years, she also bowled in many leagues around the city. Dorothy and Junior moved to Penelope in 1977, Junior died June 1983. Dorothy began working for the Penelope ISD as a librarian in 1994 and retired this May. She missed seeing the schoolchildren and her coworkers after she fell ill.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers William, Earnest and Ray McConnell, half brothers Daniel, George and Edgar DeArman, half sisters Izora Mae “Ruby” Failmezger and Nola Vinson.
Survivors are children Phyllis and Joe Rizzo of Georgetown, Ralph and Linda Reed of Houston, Carol and Don McElhannon of Robinson, Jean and Gary Herbelin of Waco and Jimmy and Georgette Reed of Penelope, a sister, Opal Blan of Oklahoma City, OK, 14 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be grandsons Keith Hunke, Brian Reed, Roger McElhannon, Travis Herbelin, Justin Reed and son-in-law, Don McElhannon.
Honorary pallbearers will be Kevin Reed, Andy McElhannon, Jarrod McElhannon and Chris Hunke.
Dorothy will be remembered and greatly missed by all who called her mother, sister, grandma, aunt and friend.
The family would like to thank Bridgeway Hospice for their caring help during her illness.
